Managing Domain Contacts

0 Was this answer helpful?

Every domain has four contact types stored in the WHOIS database. Keeping these up to date is important for domain ownership verification and communication.

Contact Types

  • Registrant — The legal owner of the domain. This is the most important contact and determines domain ownership.
  • Administrative — The person authorized to make changes to the domain. Often the same as the registrant.
  • Technical — The person responsible for the domain's technical configuration (DNS, nameservers).
  • Billing — The person responsible for domain renewal payments and billing inquiries.

Updating Contacts

  1. Log in to the client portal and go to Domains > My Domains.
  2. Click Manage next to the domain.
  3. Select the Contact Information tab.
  4. Update the fields for each contact type as needed.
  5. Click Save Changes.
Important: Changing the registrant name or organization may trigger a 60-day transfer lock on some extensions (an ICANN policy). If you need to change ownership, plan accordingly.

If you have ID Protection enabled, your proxy contact information is shown publicly, but the actual contacts on file are still used for official communications.
