Understanding PHP Versions

0 Was this answer helpful?

PHP is the programming language that powers WordPress, Joomla, and most web applications. Different applications may require different PHP versions.

Available PHP Versions

  • PHP 7.4 — Legacy support (end of life, not recommended)
  • PHP 8.0 — Stable, good compatibility
  • PHP 8.1 — Improved performance, fibers support
  • PHP 8.2 — Readonly classes, deprecated dynamic properties
  • PHP 8.3 — Typed class constants, json_validate()
  • PHP 8.4 — Latest stable release (recommended)

Changing Your PHP Version

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Navigate to Account Manager > Select PHP Version or Domain Setup.
  3. Select the desired PHP version from the dropdown.
  4. Click Save.
Warning: Changing PHP versions may break older applications that aren't compatible. Always test on a staging site first if possible, and check your application's requirements before upgrading.

We recommend using the latest stable PHP version for the best performance and security. Most modern applications support PHP 8.1 and above.
