Creating and Managing Mailing Lists

Mailing lists allow you to send emails to a group of subscribers using a single email address. They are useful for newsletters, team communications, and announcements. DirectAdmin supports mailing list functionality for your domains.

Creating a Mailing List

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Navigate to Email Manager.
  3. Click on Mailing Lists.
  4. Click Create Mailing List.
  5. Enter the list name (e.g., newsletter to create newsletter@yourdomain.com).
  6. Select the domain for the mailing list.
  7. Set the list administrator email address (this person manages the list).
  8. Set the administrator password for the list management interface.
  9. Click Create to set up the mailing list.

Adding Subscribers

There are several ways to add subscribers to your mailing list:

  • Manual addition - Through the list administration interface, add email addresses one at a time or in bulk.
  • Self-subscription - Provide a subscription email address (e.g., newsletter-subscribe@yourdomain.com) that people can email to join.
  • Web interface - Most mailing list software provides a web-based subscription form.

Managing the Mailing List

Access the list management interface to:

  • View subscribers - See all current list members.
  • Remove subscribers - Unsubscribe members who request removal.
  • Moderate messages - Review and approve messages before they are sent to the list.
  • Configure settings - Set posting permissions, moderation rules, welcome messages, and footer text.
  • View archives - Access past messages sent to the list.

Mailing List Best Practices

  • Always include an unsubscribe option in every message to comply with anti-spam regulations.
  • Use double opt-in (confirmation email) for new subscribers to prevent abuse.
  • Set posting restrictions so only authorized senders can email the list.
  • Regularly clean your subscriber list by removing bounced or inactive addresses.
Sending unsolicited bulk email through mailing lists can result in your server's IP address being blacklisted. Only send to subscribers who have explicitly opted in to receive your messages.
For large-scale email marketing campaigns with thousands of subscribers, consider using a dedicated email marketing service such as Mailchimp or SendGrid, which are designed for high-volume sending and include advanced analytics.
